I think this is one of the topics not much discussed or not much thought of. While there are understandings on how religions and racism divide people not much light is thrown on nationalism and patriotism.
I am an Indian by birth. The books which I have been reading from school times, the magazines, television and all other sources have inculcated a great sense of patriotism in me as would to any other Indian. What would had happened if I had born a few hundred kilometers across India Pakistan border? I would had been a loyal Pakistani. The point which I want to stress here is that, patriotism is a combined effect of the place of birth, political maps and border lines drawn in near past.
An Indian solider fighting a Pakistani solider would be feeling proud. The same would be the case with a Pakistani solider where he would be feeling proud. But the war is war and there is going to be loss of life and blood shed. This is the consequence patriotism has brought in.
